Link to World Building Resources
Discovered this today. All I can say is Hurrah!
When I Can’t Sleep
Some nights I can’t turn my brain off. Too much going on in my life and my mind spins for what seems like hours. The new rule is no iPhone, iPad or other screen in the bedroom. Books only before bed. This has helped a lot. In the past when I couldn’t sleep I’d
Find myself on Twitter or Facebook for hours of sleepless noodling about on the interwebs. That needed to stop.
I have a new method for getting to sleep now. One that gets my mind off the stresses of regular life and the insanity i read in the news. What I find to be most relaxing and sleep inducing is to go to the world I’m building in my mind. I go to the edges of what’s been built and I explore. The conduit to my creative side (or the door into the other universe) opens easily when I’m in a relaxed state trying to sleep. Some interesting explorations have come about since I started using this trick. I sleep better and the world is fleshing out nicely.
Sweet dreams…I’m off to do a little world building.
“The hardest part about gaining any new idea is sweeping out the false idea occupying that niche. As long as that niche is occupied, evidence and proof and logical demonstration get nowhere. But once the niche is emptied of the wrong idea that has been filling it - once you can honestly say, ‘I don’t know,” then it becomes possible to get at the truth.”
10 Things Every Creative Person (That’s YOU) Must Learn
Great blog post from successful photographer Chase Jarvis. This applies to writing as well.
“If you happen to be one of the fretful minority who can do creative work, never force an idea; you’ll abort it if you do. Be patient and you’ll give birth to it when the time is ripe. Learn to wait.”
The æther or the multiverse?

Where does my vision of this other world come from you ask? That is an excellent question. I can’t tell you. Not because I won’t, but because I don’t know myself.
The original idea came from a long and complex dream where it felt as if I was inside the minds of a number of different people. It was much like watching a movie with access to these stranger’s thoughts. I couldn’t affect events, I didn’t have context, I didn’t know where I was. Some things were explained to the people I was “inhabiting” for lack of a better word. This helped me to understand a bit more of what was happening. But honestly it was all very confusing.
The world these people lived in was not ours. That much was clear. It was fully fleshed, with everything looking different and new to me. How can all that come from inside my head in a dream? I don’t have an answer for you. But I’ve found over the years I can get into a sort of trance state and this world will expand. Details fill in, new knowledge comes through. It is more like discovery than creation.
For years this mental state would arrive unnaounced while I was busy with other tasks. Driving on a lonely highway is particularly suited to opening the portal. I am not distracted, it is more like mowing the lawn or doing a repeptitive task that allows the mind to focus on the task and also do deeper thinking. Patterns emerge and ideas that often feel like memories or visions come across. Now I’m getting better at calling up this mental state when I want to write. Sometimes access to it is lost for months at a time, then suddenly the flood gates open and I just need to write when I can find the time.
What is particularly strange is I have no problem retaining this flood of information. I met a neighbor last night, don’t ask me her name, I don’t recall. But I do have a clear vision of a village cut into the rock wall in a desert canyon on a planet that doesn’t exist. I can tell you stories about the families of the main people that I follow in my visits to this other place. I can tell you about the small rituals of their daily lives. I can tell you about their hopes and dreams.
I have an idea, based on science, of what could be happening. It sounds more interesting than the idea that some part of my mind spools this out for my pleasure when I’m bored on a long drive. Perhaps I’m seeing into another world that does exist. Am I seeing around a corner in the multiverse?
The concept of the multiverse states that every time something changes a new universe of infinite possibilities is spawned. This is happening at all times across an infinite universe of infinite iterations. Which essentially means anything we can imagine may be true in another version of the universe. It also means everything is true, everything is happening, has happened, will happen. Does your brain hurt yet?
To expand your knowledge on this theory - listen to this excellent RadioLab podcast - The Multi Universe(s). When I first read about this concept I was reminded of one of my favorite novels, Robert Heinlein’s The Number of the Beast*. Four people travel through space-time into other universes, some we recognize as fictional from the minds of other authors like Burroughs and Heinlein himself. They use a ship outfitted with a “continua device” From wikipedia, “The geometry of the novel’s universe contains six dimensions; the three spatial dimensions known to the real world, and three time dimensions - t, the real world’s temporal dimension, τ (tau), and т (teh). The continua device can travel on all six axes. The continua device allows travel into various fictional universes, such as the Land of Oz, as well as through time.” I loved the idea as a child and still find it fascinating.
Which brings me back to my other world. Maybe it’s real. Maybe I’m not really imagining it from the æther. Maybe, just maybe, my mind bends space-time a bit and I’m peering through the quantum looking glass at a people that really exist. Unlikely but nonetheless fun to ponder.
“No storyteller has been able to dream up anything as fantastically unlikely as what really does happen in this mad Universe.” Robert A. Heinlein
* - while doing a bit of researching via google on The Number of the Beast for this post I came across a delightful thread from the Heinlein Society speculating on the reason Heinlein wrote this book that deviates from the Lazarus Long stories so late in his career.
“Spider Robinson once said, after having figured out only a part of what the book was, that this is a book that Heinlein wrote for his friends, for the people who *care* about the field. I add that he also wrote it for any nascent writers with enough wit to realize what it was … the supreme hacker’s easter-egg.”
Looks like I’ll be digging around in the Heinlein section of my bookshelf sometime soon.
The 2010 film that touches on the concept of the mulitverse. I haven’t seen it. Have any of you? Thoughts?
Timing
When I can’t find the flow of writing I’ll work on organization elements. I’ve spent much of today working on the timeline for the story. I know the major arcs, but not how they intersect yet. Last night a major piece fell into place and I have the beginning of the third story arc. I decided I needed a timeline tool to keep it all straight for the reader as complexity builds. Organization is useful as well as a convenient form of procrastination. Often when I come back to the writing the flow has returned.
I’m trying out Aeon Timeline. It is in beta and I’m finding it a bit crashy. It doesn’t want to digest my 45,000 years of back history at the moment. I like the idea though and it has driven me to think about eras/epochs in the back-story. And hopefully it will help me set up the timing and pacing of the book.
I’m finally setting up a dedicated office at home. Primer is on the walls and I’ll finish it after the holidays. Then I can print what I need and set the whole thing up nicely on the wall in front of me. Maybe I’ll do a whole wall of cork-strips, I haven’t decided. But with my propensity for travel and my inability to sit still in the same place for day after day I need it all organized digitally as well. I’d love to invent a folding sheet of nano-paper that as you unfold it expands into another layer of detail like a mind map or outline. I was born in the wrong era.
I found Aeon Timeline via Anthony Johnston’s blog. Amazing what you find in a simple search. He also uses Scrivener and has some interesting tips/tools for writers. Thanks again to my friend and award winning Science Fiction and Fantasy author Kij Johnson for turning me onto Scrivener to begin with.
When writing it is best if I surround myself with sounds and sights that conjour up the world that lives in my mind. Music is important, but so are photos. This image is a perfect example of a place I’ve seen in my dreams, but never on this earth.

Kickstarter - Stefan's got a CD of original songs planned.
My good friend Stefan Zwahlen is putting together a CD of original music. You may recognize one of the songs from the Spin video I put together. He’s also kind enough to use one of my images for his album cover. Please help him fund this great opportunity via Kickstarter! Thanks.
More Creature Design
I inadvertently swiped a book from a friend. After Man: A Zoology of the Future by Douglas Dixon seemed worth looking at. I put in in a stack of books and home it came to Utah. The premise is explained in the title. The author extrapolates species evolution based on creatures that are likely to survive a big species die off after humanity wrecks the planet. Rats become large predators, rabbits become larger grazers, etc. He covers every major land and sea mass. You can see how and why he arrived at these conclusions. Many of the creatures are interesting and creative.
We have a tendency as humans to reject the fantastical. We assume we know all that is out there. New creatures are the fantasy of the crazy fringe. Saquatch is an example of this. And if you recall, the Gorilla was thought to be a myth until 1847 and Western scientists argued over whether it truly existed until 1902.
The balance point is creating non human species that fire the imagination without being so weird as to be difficult to grasp. I am starting with sea creatures. Land creatures are next. I’m not sure how far to push land creatures as they are more integral to the story. I’ll need beast of burden, predators and herd beasts. Many of them filling similar niches to the horses, dogs, goats, and sheep we have on earth. But how to stretch them, shift them, mold them into exciting and new shapes is the question. Any ideas out there?
These lanterns inspired me recently. I have been working on rituals, celebrations and traditions of the people who inhabit the world I’m building. The mainstream society is under very effective control by the people in power. They use subtle and not so subtle means to affect their control. I won’t spoil the way I worked a type of sky lantern into the story, but in my mind’s eye the night sky is full of lanterns against a sky full of stars and the conjunction of the two moons. This display is one that is both a true celebration and a method of reminding the people who is in control.

Looks like I need to order some books…
I need sea critters
Maybe this will give me some ideas. Guess I’m super visual because as I write it’s like a movie in my head. Seeing images like this can really inspire me.
Weird Writing Habits Of Famous Authors
I found this hilarious and interesting. I often lay on the couch with a movie on in the background. I guess I’m mildly ADD because if it’s too quiet my mind wanders.
